In this talk, based on her recent prize-winning book, Carolyn Eisenberg re-interprets the strategic decisions made by US President Richard Nixon and his National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger during the last years of the Vietnam War.  Drawing upon a vast array of declassified documents, Eisenberg reveals how Nixon and Kissinger’s failures to achieve their military and diplomatic goals in Vietnam led them to make major concessions to China and the Soviet Union—many of which were kept secret for decades.  Fifty years after America’s withdrawal and defeat in Vietnam, Fire and Rain offers a gripping new account of geopolitical decision making, civil society, and the human toll of the war on the people of Southeast Asia.
